I don’t usually work with beads larger then size 11/0 but really enjoyed making this multi-coloured bracelet using 6mm Preciosa mix! Mirabilia Designs #78: Royal Holiday stitched by Kelley Phillips Shields. Pattern designed by Nora Corbett.

I finished Royal Holiday, just in time to miss the Christmas 2023 season! 😆 I chose this 32-ct linen (PTP Gingerbread) but when I got it, it was darker and more saturated than I thought it would be. It turned the original charted colors [of her dress & skintones, specifically] almost gray, blah and flat. Her skintones became ruddy and dull. So I converted those original colors to warm gold & brighter tones. I want to keep her on my wall year-round so this vintage-y fabric helps mute the "Christmas picture" feel.

I also changed:

— the greenery to darker colors and used brighter beads

— adjusted her facial features a bit and made her more bold. Stitched 2-over-one tent stitch

— all of the Mill Hill beads were converted to Delica beads and I added a few MH treasures

— changed out the charted DMC + Kreinik swirls in her dress to all Delica beads. The beads added bling and depth to her gorgeous gown!

— I changed the candle and ribbon to red, beaded the flame and added a bead halo

— used Preciosa Crystals as jewels for her earring, cape and fur trim on the bottom

— I stitched the Wisper white using 2-over-2 tent stitch and it was fast, with even coverage. It didn’t break, knot or get thin. It was fun to use and I’ll never shy away from it again!

I absolutely loved stitching Christmas Queen - Nora designed a true beauty with this one!

Lots of progress this weekend.

Firstly, the shoes are finished. I'd love it if I never have to make gladiator sandals again, personally. I had to redo the top of each one several times for fit, and I completely depleted the scrap fabric I was using to make these.

I also went ahead and finished the necklace. I've have the prism part done since about November or so but I was putting off doing the necklace because I hate foamwork. I really love the resin gem. I added glitter to the bottom when I cast it which creates a nice depth when the light hits it.

I managed to get it to work as a solid band around the back of the neck - not particularly important for Dimitri, who has hair that will cover that spot, but important for Felix, who my wife is cosplaying and who has a ponytail and will continue to have a ponytail as a genderbend.

Ugly seam is ugly, but it can be because it's hidden. The closure is magnetic and nestles behind the gem. The 5 mm foam is thick enough to hold its shape when pressed together, so I didn't need another stabilization point. Ideally, I would have liked to match the color on this for the felt, but it's hidden anyway and that was the closest color I had on hand that wouldn't give me an allergic reaction (I have wool felt in that color, but it would cause me trouble on my neck).

I got a chunk of beading done on the tabard sides, and added the last of the trim that it needed. Hopefully I can finish the beading on the tabard today. I also want to go in on the silver part of the skirt and add some silver preciosa bicones at some point.

I think I finished everything that I wanted to do with my Cricut Maker as well. I cut 12+ crests for each of us in holographic vinyl (blue for me, transparent blue for her... they're both blue and transparent though). These will be on our dangles as an embellishment.

I also cut my rhinestone flock template. This will be used to add hotfix rhinestones to the bottom of the skirt. I'm planning to color match so it should be subtle.

In case you also have a Maker, I cut this flock without the paper backing, flock side up on a standard grip mat with the bonded wool felt setting, and ran it through twice. Once probably would have worked fine but I wanted to make sure it would work.

If you want to do anything with rhinestone templates, I can't recommend flock enough. It was pretty easy to design (I just went over the Blaiddyd Crest with dots the right size), mirrored and flipped pieces as needed, and cut it in my cricut. It worked on the first try with how I'd spaced everything. This is so much faster and precise than placing everything by hand would have been.

And here's the test on a scrap piece of dupioni with scrap rhinestones in the same size that came with my rhinestone brush. Unimpressed dog in background is unimpressed. 20 seconds at 320 F with my heat press at about 30 lbs of pressure did the job and caused no problem with the silk. Only one rhinestone of the entire design got displaced, which I adhered with gem tac (I didn't want to get my hotfix tool out).

👀 And not because I know from experience or anything, but don't use cricut transfer tape for rhinestone transfers. It isn't heat resistant and will try to melt on your heat press (I got it off in time).

Thankfully I figured out my rhinestone flock came with transfer tape so I'm all set tor doing this on my actual costume.

I won't be getting as much done this coming weekend because I'm going out of town Thursday night - Friday midday, then I have a friend coming in that afternoon from out of town, and on Saturday, I get my Byleth tattoo on my leg so I won't really feel like doing much after that.

Material Notes: Austrian Crystal

When you come to my website, a thing you might see is something called "Austrian Crystal". Ha. Due to a Company that probably should not be named because I am a small producer of jewelry and cannot afford that potential legal battle (I honestly haven't checked back in with my supplier since the pandemic, when this particular company began to throw their hissy fit, so their being so militant may be no longer the case, but again lawyers that I cant afford), I cannot declare what this product is made of beyond that it is Austrian Crystal. The reasons this policy change were reasonable; there is a portion of the jeweler world who were knowingly making/purchasing knock off beads and selling at the brand name, another group would purchase what they thought would be the real deal it was knock off, and one rumor put it also being they thought some of the things being made by small jewelers were tacky. Their decision was to limit their suppliers, make authorized purchasers at these suppliers have to purchase over a certain amount as a means of saying they are a big producer, and anyone who they don't negotiate with directly and have been purchasing from their chosen suppliers for years can only use the term "Austrian crystals".

At least the Czech Preciosa hasn't flipped their shit. And Crystal Passions continue to give their fellow Austrians the bird as they fully take over the small producer market for a splash of sparkles.

But, yeah, decade of using only Swarovski and Preciosa means nothing if you cant drop $2000 a year

I'm getting more and more pieces done. I hate doing foamwork so the pauldron was like pulling teeth, but the pattern is entirely self-drafted by me. Both the blue and silver parts are fabric-covered with a stretch metallic. I prefer to do this method because I tend to mess up paint on costumes. The front and back coin still need to be made and attached, and then I can work on the "necklaces".

I added chains to drape from the pauldron to give it something to make it look a bit more interesting. I wanted to do something cool with the freshwater pearls I got, so I did my first wire wrapping project to turn them into a chain. I think they look really nice on the paldron! I added a rhinestone chain as well (not pictured).

I ultimately decided that the blue goldwork piece wasn't the right shape for Dimitri's chest mark, so I opted to make a new one with beads (mostly preciosa crystals). This was my first time embroidering on poly organza and aside from the edge melting being a bit scary, it was very straightforward and I'll be doing this with future applique.

There isn't that much that I have left to do:

-armbands and arm drapes + associated accessories

-the necklace (mainly, attaching the resin prism I've made to the fabric covered foam)

-finishing the beadwork on the tabard

-rhinestoning the skirt (and whatever else I decide to rhinestone)

-attaching the Faerghus flag goldwork pieces to the tabard

-the pauldron coins and necklace chains

-the shoes

-wig cutting and styling

I also need to attach the corresponding velcro from the pauldron to my shoulder strap, but that will require a fitting and can wait until I'm finished with the coins and such.

My plan is to work on the shoes today, as I don't work on Mondays. If I have time leftover, I'll try to get the bead embroidery on the tabard finished. The goldwork attachment will be one of the last things I do on the dress, as it's relatively delicate.
